Yesterday I went to the Polo field in the heart of Palermo (Las Cañitas) to watch the Open Argentinian Polo Championships. This was great! I had seen a pologame before, but that one was by far not as spectacular as what I saw yesterday.

other pologame, forgot to bring my camera…

The game is fast, wild almost and fascinating. The chukkers are short (7 minutes) so there are some pauzes in the game, but these are short as well (about 3 minutes). Ponies are being swapped for fresh ones and off they are again! Another thing I liked was the crowd. Instead of cheering, shouting and singing everybody just claps for each goal (well I did, because I did not know which side to take as I don’t know the teams), very civil and polite.

The Championships last until the 6th of December, so if you’re in town and want to see something spectacular and very Argentinian go to the polofields. The games are every Saturday and Sunday starting at 15.00 with a match on the secondary field and at about 17.30 the ‘real’ game starts at the primary field.

Campo Argentino de Polo
Av. del Libertador y Dorrego
Tickets via Ticketek.com.ar or at the entrance (Av. del Libertador)
From 15-11 to 06-12 every Saturday and Sunday 3 pm.

I have updated the events calendar with events for October and November in Buenos Aires. Because everything is new for me as well I cannot write about them out of personal experience, but I think there are some events that could be really nice and I will highlight them.

The first event is from October 29th – November 2nd and is <a href="http://www.buenosairesphoto.com/index.htm" target=_"blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.buenosairesphoto.com/index.htm?referer=');">Buenos Aires Photo. The result of an open competition (and free choice of theme) of which 12 finalists will show their work at the Palais de Glace. You can see the work of last year’s finalists <a href="http://www.buenosairesphoto.com/finalistas.htm" target=_"blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.buenosairesphoto.com/finalistas.htm?referer=');">here. The <a href="http://www.palaisdeglace.org/" target=_"blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.palaisdeglace.org/?referer=');">Palais de Glace (a national monument) is also worth a visit. Originally built as an indoor ice skating ring, it soon started hosting tangoshows. To the horror of the neighbourhood’s elite, because tango was not chique around 1910. The protests faded when tango became more and more an apreciated art form. In 1931 the palace was remodelled by architect Alejandro Bustillo to become a centre for art exhibitions.

Not far from the Palais de Glace is Avenida Alvear (the Bond Street/ 5th Avenue of Bs. As.) where the 3rd edition of <a href="http://www.alvearfa.com.ar/" target=_"blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.alvearfa.com.ar/?referer=');">Alvear Fashion and Arts will take place from 24-30 October. In this week the exclusive boutiques and shops in will show important pieces of art. Stroll along this beautiful street while enjoying the cultural activities which will be organized. Don’t forget to shop for the latest fashion (if your budget allows it). And if you want to take a peek in one of the world’s most exclusive hotels stop at the <a href="http://www.alvearpalace.com/v2/tealvear.php" target=_"blank" onclick="pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/www.alvearpalace.com/v2/tealvear.php?referer=');">Alvear Palace Hotel for a high tea. It also participates so may also host some pieces of art.

This chique and fashionable area is one of the most expensive of Buenos Aires. “La Recoleta” was founded in the 18th century as a place for pray and retreat for Franciscan monks. Around 1871 the rich settled here, fleeing the outbreak of yellow fever in the southern parts of the city. This upscale neighbourhood has a lot to offer. Walk around the broad avenues and parks and enjoy the beautiful architecture. Do some shopping at exclusive boutiques or at one of the shopping malls, such as Patio Bullrich. And of course pay a visit to the beautiful city of the dead: Cementerio de la Recoleta.

Recoleta Cemetery is the oldest and most aristocratic cemetery of Buenos Aires. It includes tombs and mausoleums of many famous people, the most famous being the one of Evita Perón. I find her tomb not very impressive and rather boring compared to others though, and it’s hard to find, make sure to follow a crowd or buy a map. Around the cemetery there are a lot of things to do. Next to the cemetery you’ll find the Recoleta Cultural Centre, it offers a wide range of expositions in art, music and theatre. On Saturday and Sunday Plaza Francia changes into a very nice fair where people play music, make art and sell all kinds of handicraft, art and food. You can visit Village Recoleta (cinema’s, restaurants, bars and bookstores) or Buenos Aires Design the biggest shopping center for interior decoration of Latin America. Also the National Museum of Fine Arts is closeby.

Points of interest:

Recoleta Cemetery
Address: Junín 1760
Open: Every day from 8 am to 6 pm.
Guided tours: Free, on the last Sunday of each month at 2:30 pm.

The flower, Floris Generica (see picture), at Plaza de Naciones Unidades. This monument represents a colossal flower, in stainless steel and alluminium. This beautiful piece of art really works! The flower opens and closes consistent with daylight, just like real flowers do. Each petal weighs about 4 tons. Created by Architect Eduardo Catalano.

Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes (National museum of fine arts)
Hours: Tuesday to Friday from 12.30 am to 7.30 pm.
Saturday and Sunday from 9.30 am to 7.30 pm.
Admission: Free

Patio Bullrich Shopping Center
This is one of the smallest but most exclusive and fashionable shopping centers of BA. International brands like Cacharel, Kenzo, Lacroix, Versace are sold.
Av. del Libertador 750
Open : Monday to Sunday from 10 am to 9 pm.

The second is interesting because it is this time not paint, but a mozaic of little stones, glass etc. I found it in a small street, on the other side of it a shop with design clothes has a mozaic in the same style on the facade.
